Tax on items in a grocery store?

  • is tax added at a grocery store to items like cookies, chips, candy, juice, etc (processed/prepackaged food)? if it matters, i am in california.

  • The state does matter, as sales tax regulations are a matter of state law, and what items are taxable varies by state.

Most food items you would purchase in a grocery store are non-taxable. The major exceptions are hot foods or foods which are "ordinarily" sold for consumption on the premises (whether or not you specifically are consuming them on the premises).

Items purchased with food stamps are non-taxable even if they would otherwise be taxable.

  • No, only on things like soda, alcohol and juices that are not 100% juice. All other consumables are non taxable.
