Galvanising (Usually hot dipping in liquid zinc) and Sheradising (heating in a rotating drum of powdered zinc) are two alternatives to the above answers, using zinc to provide steel with a protective coating.Hot dip treated steel is a common material in the building trade for fasteners, and bulk materials such as steel plates and beams. The zinc is galvanically sacrificial to the steel, hence it provides protection to small areas even if it is scratched or damaged.
Some materials like aluminium do not need protective coatings as the surface is self protecting. On exposure to oxygen the surface oxidises forming a much harder material, that protects the underlying metal.
