What is it like to be a scientist?

  • Is it hard? Tiring?

  • I am an astronomer. Yes, you work hard a lot. But if you really like science it's fun and doesn't really feel like work, it feels more like a hobby.

  • There was a joke I heard once that went like this.

There was a Business man, a fireman, and a physicist in a bar. The Business man asked the other two whether they would like to have a mistress or a wife.
The fire man quickly said, "I would rather have a wife. After a long night of risking my life, I want to know there is someone there when I get home."
The Business man replied, "Well, I would rather have the mistress. I hate being tied down."
The Physicist said, "I would rather have both. That way, the wife would think I was with the mistress, the mistress would think I was with the wife, and I could go back to the lab and do physics!"

  • It's not as hard as most jobs--fairly low pressure usually. You pretty much set your own pace and have to be self-motivated to get stuff done and keep yourself ontrack. The pay isn't as good as other jobs you could get if you have the brains and talent to work in science, but as the answer above said, if you like it, it's more a hobby you get paid for than a job.

Science grants are just wellfare for geeks to keep them from needing day jobs to support their hobbies.
