What fraction of the worldwide market for oligo synthesis is in 1)
96-well plate deliveries of unmodified oligos, 2) single tube
deliveries of unmodified oligos, and 3) modified oligos? Please
express the answer in terms of number of units and overall revenue. I beleive
that the overall market is approximately $400 million and want to know
how a new technology for producing modified oligos less expensively
would fit into that market. I need to be able to justify the answer
so please point towards publically available information that supports
this answer. If the answer requires purchase of private research
materials for supprot please provide the information I will need to
purchase these materials. This information is not easily obtained and is not free. I would
suggest to consider a purchase of a market study from Bioinformatics,
LLC (www.gene2drug.com). They did a recent study of US market for
oligonucleotides and may provide answers to your
questions.(http://www.gene2drug.com/reports/default.asp?action=details&report_id=74&criteria=Oligonucleotides).
If this comment was helpful, I would appreciate if you could email to
answers-editors@google.com and share your experience and my ID,
gooscientist-ga. I would like to become a Google Researcher, however,
Google does not accept new applications at this time. Thanks! This answer was free, so I'm not digging into marketing stuff. I'm
not sure anyone here has the skill set to answer this question for
you. You have priced it appropriately.
I cannot speak much to market size, but the bulk of the costs for
oligonucleotides is in the chemistry used to produce them, not in
instrumentation or in the format. It is basically a commodity market
sensitive to the costs of acetonitrile, phosphoramidites, etc.
In terms of modified oligonucleotides, I would guess that the number
is probably less than 1/5 of the total in that the bulk of the market
is in preparing primers for PCR. Use of oligonucleotides as probes is
quite popular however, modifiers are subject to scientific restraints,
such as the structure and length of the linker etc., so you will be in
a competitive market with respect to desired properties.
Life Technologies used to be the worlds leading supplier of
oligonucleotides. At one time, all of their oligonucleotides were
made in a 96 well plate format and shipped out separately. I'm not
sure if you could contact one of their marketing people for some
support.
