Okay, i recently upgraded to windows xp pro, from windows ME..basically everything is okay except for adobe photoshop 7, when i try to to do a simple thing like fill in a marque it takes for ever, and i can't even apply some effects, i get an error saying not enough RAM, although i never had this problem before..
I only have 256mb now, do i get this error because XP takes more RAM than ME did?? If so, about how much ram would i need now?Originally posted by teet
i noticed that he said that he UPGRADED from windows ME to XP Pro...windows will often (not always) run funny if you don't format your hdd first. this could be a likely cause of his problem.

Thats most likely the problem. Windows ME was a horrible OS, even Microsoft admits that. ;) "Upgrading" over that will work, just not very well. I would reccommend anytime you need a windows reinstall to format the drive first. After backing up all the data you need first. (When you do backup the date be carefull about using the backup tool that microsoft includes with the WinOS. The versions are not compatable... If you back something up in 98 don't expect it to restore in XP.)
Cheers!
-Niannalternatively, just install windows 2000 since thats the best compromise between stability and non-system hog (unlike XP). Or buy more RAM.Yeah... your RAM is definitely not the problem. I have 128 megs of RAM, and I upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP as well. I run Photoshop 7.0, Flash MX 2004 Pro at the same time and I have no trouble what-so-ever with speed. It only starts to slow down when i have Windows Media Player and Dreamweaver MX 2004 open with the prior mentioned programs as well. Check the msconfig settings on your computer (don't change anything unless you know what you're doing) and check compatibility with certain PCI cards. Sometimes they can slow down a system. I once had a problem with a buggy Creative Soundblaster card, when I replaced it I was fine. So just try troubleshooting. If you've got a buddy who can loan you some RAM for testing, I say go ahead with it, but if you don't have the dough, don't worry about it.unfortunately, 256 is minimum any more.
Revhttp://aulman.com/rev.gifin photoshop set the options so that PS take ~ 80% of your ram and, when photoshop is open, CTRl-alt-del and right click photoshop.exe and give it 'above normal' priority... should help a tad...
oh and look for that site rev (i think) gave away to remove all the nasty ram-eating gadgets of XP...i got 256 and 2.0ghz.... LAG! :p especially with war3 so you need like 512 and upi don't think that the amount of RAM he has is the issue...
i say that because i have a laptop that is a couple years old...P3, 1Ghz, 256mb RAM, XP Home, and it runs photoshop 7 without a problem...in fact, i often run photoshop 7, flash mx, windows media player, and internet explorer all at the same time with little problem.
i used to build quite a few XP systems that only had 128 mb of RAM, and they ran perfectly fine
i think something else is causing the problem...

-teetXP takes up 64 MB. Always! never ending.try allocating more virtual ram to you pc it will probably fix this problem a bit not fully but it will improve the performance of you machine ;)I think buying more ram is cheaper and XP is a great OS, very stable.yeah, XP takes up a lot more ram. get more :beam:#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
