This might sound stupid, but I'm no expert in economy :( Can someone tell me the reason(s) Japanese economy has been experiencing problems since early '90s? (just the basic facts)

It's like I've been in charge of Japanese finances - meaningless shopping, meaningless shopping and some more meaningless shopping :D No wonder their economy is doing so bad :)This thread by senseiman is pretty interesting... Originally; they were talking about the worst tourist attractions, but somewhere in the thread, there are some realistic ideas as to why Japan is in an economy slump.
