Japan Offers Help to Egypt for Bird Flu

| أعلن السفير الياباني بالقاهرة، كاوورا شيكاوا، عن استعداد بلاده لمساعدة مصر من أجل السيطرة علي فيروس أنفلونزا الطيور، من خلال التعاون مع منظمة «اليونيسيف». The Japanese ambassador in Cairo, Kawora Hikawa, expressed his country's willingness to assist Egypt for the control of avian influenza virus, through cooperation with the «UNICEF». وأشار شيكاوا - خلال زيارته بصحبة الدكتور فتحي سعد، محافظ الجيزة، لقرية طموة بمركز أبوالنمرس - إلي أن وقف زحف هذا المرض ممكن إذا تضافرت جميع الجهود الحكومية وغير الحكومية، من أجل زيادة التوعية الخاصة لدي الأمهات والأطفال لمكافحة المرض. For his part, Governor of Giza: This visit is aimed to increase awareness among the citizens, to avoid the effects of avian influenza, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Population, with the support of the Japanese government, pointing out that the visit comes within the many programmes to control the disease, and then disposed of final. وأضاف سعد: إن البرنامج يهدف إلي زيادة التوعية لدي المواطنين، خاصة في المناطق الريفية، التي تزيد فيها نسبة تربية الطيور بالمنازل، وبالتالي من الممكن أن يتعرض المربون للإصابة، خاصة السيدات والأطفال، إذا لم يتعرفوا علي أساليب مواجهة المرض والسلوكيات الواجب توافرها وأساليب الوقاية منه. He stressed that there is great response from the citizens of awareness programmes, pointing out that the latest statistics were about how to respond to the awareness programmes, indicated that 82% of the citizens have adequate information about the disease and its symptoms. وقال الدكتور مصطفي المراغي، وكيل وزارة الصحة بالجيزة، إن البرنامج يستهدف العديد من المحافظات بخلاف الجيزة، حيث تم تدريب الرائدات الريفيات علي البرنامج، وتعبئة المجتمع المحلي، مثل الجمعيات الأهلية، وتكثيف الجهود خاصة بالريف، مؤكداً أن الهدف الرئيسي هو تغيير الممارسات الخاطئة لدي المواطنين، خاصة اختلاط الأطفال والنساء بالطيور، بالإضافة إلي الحد من شراء الطيور من مصادر غير آمنة. Education against bird flu
In developing countries, breeding poultry is one of the most practical ways to survive. Chickens and other stock farming birds provide food for the poor on a daily basis, and they can eventually sell what’s left.
You often come across these birds and animals in the street and even in houses, living completely free. But the recent discovery of possible bird-to-man transmission of bird flu has made this coexistence deadly.
Last December Fardousse Kandil, a 35 year old Egyptian woman, died. She was the nineteenth human victim of bird flu. She died in only a few hours. Fardousse was raising an infected animal in her home.
The Egyptian government – in association with UNICEF and Japanese authorities – has started a vast information campaign to try to prevent further deaths. Its goal is to explain to people living in the country what precautions should be taken to minimise the risks of infection. Thus, 13 000 educators are traveling all around Egypt. Knocking on nearly everyone’s door.
In Egypt, it's impossible to stop people from raising poultry at home. One in four chickens has been raised this way. These animals are an economic necessity for many people. But the authorities want everybody to be aware that what can feed them can also kill them.
Nonetheless it is hard to change. Abdel Hakam, the recent brid-flu victim's husband, is sure she died of pneumonia and says he will keep raising dangerous animals at home.
