Streaming FROM the XBOX to a PC ... please disregard flamming the thread...

  • Hi all,

I have been using XBMC for numerous years now, so first off I would like to say THANKS! Great job and keep it up.

Now moving on to the topic:
I have read up on the functionality of XBMC as a "server" however I have had no luck in acquiring a suitable UPnP client (see XBMC as UPnP server) or any other manageable streaming functionality.

    Disclaimer
    ----------
If you want to leave non-constructive comments (IE "use a PC to stream", "why would you want to stream from an xbox", or my favorite is anything that refers to me being a "newbie") please disregard this post and thank you for your time thus far.

1)I have already looked at network settings here (http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Network_Settings).

2.1)I have noticed the UPnP page here (http://xbmc.org/wiki/index.php?title=UPnP_Sharing)

    2.2)with the most noticeable passage:
XBMC also have a built-in UPnP-server (since the 24th of January 2007) which enables you to share your video/picture/audio files to all XBMC Xboxes on your local-network. XBMC's built-in UPnP-server can also stream those same video/picture/audio files to other UPnP-clients ("UPnP AV MediaServer ControlPoint" devices), however since the Xbox (XDK) does not support multicast those other UPnP-clients must support recieving broadcasts or they will not be able to auto-detect XBMC's UPnP-server, (but those UPnP-clients that do not support broadcast discovery of UPnP-servers might still be able to stream from XBMC's UPnP-server if they support manual entering of the IP-address that your Xbox with XBMC is using).

Questions about Streaming from the xbox:
    -----------------------------------------
    1)Is it possible.....and how so.
    2) Has anyone else successfully accomplished this?
3)Anyone try this on Vista (current OS)
4)Anyone know a decent free/open client for UPnP that's compatible for Vista

*If you want to discuss the choice in OS, as in Vista, please PM me and we can have the discussion there. Otherwise leave "vista sux" comments to the unoriginals at http://whyvistasucks.blogspot.com/ .

I'll keep up my researching, but I am sure you have all experienced that "can't figure it out moment" once before.

    For now more TF2...

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi there and welcome to the forums.

I personally haven't tried the streaming stuff, but I have been informed that it works just fine. Some answers to your questions (albeit not from experience, but this is how it's supposed to work!)

    1. Yes, use the UPnP server.
    2. Yes - many have successfully streamed from XBMC to XBMC and from XBMC to other UPnP clients (such as the 360).
    3. XBMC should function as a client under vista.
    4. XBMC.

Basically: Grab XBMC for win32, setup your UPnP shares on your xbox, launch XBMC on your win32 box + add a upnp source. You should be able to find your xbox and stream from it.

Let us know how it goes.

    Cheers,
    Jonathan
