Illegal Operation on Shutdown

  • I just installed Outpost 1.0.1817.1645 on my Dell Dimension XPS M200s with Windows 95 operating system. Everytime I shutdown Windows, Outpost causes an "Illegal Operation." The same Illegal Operation occurs if I shutdown Outpost individually while Windows and my other programs continue to operate. Otherwise, Outpost loads and appears to be operating fine. After I try to shut down my PC, I must exit the Illegal Operation notice before Windows will close; closing Outpost by itself also requires an exit from the illegal operation message before Outpost will "shutdown." I uninstalled and then reinstalled Outpost 1.0.1817 and the same problem continues to occur. When Outpost is uninstalled (without any reinstalling), Windows shuts down with no problem.

    Please advise.

    Steve

  • I have the same problem running Win95 - 4.00.950A with AVG 6.0.803 virus protection and OP 1.0.242. I have a squeaky clean system with no Spyware/Adware/Virus. (that's what I do for a living now - I am a semi-retired Software Engineer of 20+years, and I'm not talking VB or Java here - I did some kick-***! low-level applications).

The problem persists even after manually shutting down all other apps, and then trying to manually "exit and shutdown" OP. I even turned off all plugins. I haven't bothered to run the problem down yet, but I will see what I can find out.

  • Welcome to the forums Steve315,

Did you have any other firewalls installed on your system? If so, do check that they were properly removed (the uninstall procedure for some does not do a full job - check the Extended Application or Firewall Uninstall/Install Instructions (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7186) FAQ for details and the 1 if you had ZoneAlarm installed).

Aside from that, also check that you have no network-level applications running on your system (e.g. packet sniffers, network diagnostics, port monitors, VPN software) - these could conflict with Outpost. If in doubt, try shutting down all other running applications before closing Outpost (use the Windows Process Watcher from the Windows 95 Kernel Toys Set (http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WUToys/W95KernelToy/Default.asp) or a utility like TaskInfo 2003 (http://www.iarsn.com/taskinfo.html) to check what is running).

Aside from that, Windows 95 compatibility is a marginal area (given that Microsoft dropped support for it a while back). Outpost Free should work with it though.

  • What version of 95 do you have Steve? I have the same problem with 95A and have none of the things P2K mentioned installed. I haven't got around to chasing it down but I have a gut feeling that this is some incompability with the early version. I may never chase it down as I hardly use the thing but I may, if I can overcome this potential barrier and do something, take the big step to 98 instead.
