Outpost free - do I need Outpost Pro???

  • I have the latest Outpost free (with all ports stealthed, and one closed: ShieldsUp!), supported by Adaware, Bazooka, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, SpywareGuard, Hijack This!, and various XP tweaks (e.g. changed name from administrator and use password), so on this basis, what would Outpost Pro offer me I don't already have

  • Moderate the tone please - there's no point in making personal comments.

As for the 6 programs, only some of them run all the time (AdAware and HiJack This! are run on demand, Spyware Blaster makes once-off Windows Registry changes to restrict ActiveX controls). It certainly isn't going to cause as much harm as spyware itself although having multiple programs running in the background may slightly reduce performance.

Anti-spyware utilities are generally less demanding than anti-virus background scanners (which can activate on every file opened, read or written) and should not conflict in the same way that multiple firewalls can.

  • Better logging, protection right from Windows startup (Outpost Pro kicks in straight after the network interfaces are enabled), Component Control, enhanced stateful inspection, yadda yadda - there's a full list here (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/profree.html). ;)

  • Adaware (www.lavasoft.de) = 1 anti-spyware programs
    Bazooka (www.kephyr.com) = 2 anti-spyware programs
    Spyware Bot (www.spybot.info) = 3 anti-spyware programs
    Spyware Blaster (www.javacoolsoftware.com) = 4 anti-spyware programs
    Spyware Guard (www.javacoolsoftware.com) = 5 anti-spyware programs
    Hi-Jack This! (www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/) = 6 anti-spyware programs

Running 6 anti-spyware programs is likely to do more harm than good. If your running this many programs doing the same thing at the same time you might as well have spyware installed.
It is possible that this may not be enough :) Check this post (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11687) in the Chit Chat forum.

  • Slightly off topic, but why do you have so many anti-spyware programs? Isn't that a bit of an overkill?

err.. where do you see his anti-spyware programs?? ... myself I just use the new internet explorer and block ALL popups/activex, just holding down ctrl when I wanna open a real popup isnt gonna kill me :) and IMO that reduces my chances of getting spyware by 80%. Then I use Adaware Se and Spybot Search and Destroy (with sdhelper) to scan my comp from time to time.

Maybe you should learn how to read?

Not true. With the current spyware environment it's not possible to fix everything with one tool. Of course, these programs are largely run sequentially. The Parasite Fight! (http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm) article offers an overview of the subject.
