Why do so many people still choose to live and work in san fransisco,ca.?
p.s. i am just passing through.
You might well ask why people live in Florida when they know there's going to be hurricanes--and a lot more frequently than a big earthquake here.
We're prepared, or at least as prepared as you can be for some major shaking.
Fun fact: The biggest earthquake in the US took place in Missouri.
If people didn't think wishfully then they wouldn't live there. (oh, it won't happen to me! they don't know it will be that bad the quake will be do they?)
People just put those thought on the back of their mind and go on with their daily lives.
I too live on the San Andreas Fault line in Palm Springs but I live in a structure that was build with the "big one" in mind. and I know that a big quake could have devastating effects on the economy but I work from home so it doesn't matter than much, just so long as I have my internet, phone line and running water....... wait a sec, that could be wiped out in a big quake. WHY DOES ANYONE LIVE HERE? WHY DO I LIVE HERE?
...Meh! I'm going to go lay out by the pool, later!
San Francisco is a cool city. I live about 35 miles east of them. I'd live there if I could afford it.
cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf, Ferry Building, gorgeous churches and Synagogues, China Town, Japan Town, Coit Tower, Cliff House overlooking the Pacific Ocean, plus many other sites too numerous to mention. The buildings have never been safer. Each earthquake creates building code improvements, upgrades.
